Add a watermark to a PDF

Mark a document as a draft, as confidential, or as belonging to you. Type the text and it appears across every page immediately — drag it where you want it, and what you see settles into exactly what gets exported.

How it works

  1. 01Open the PDF.
  2. 02Type the watermark text.
  3. 03Drag it into position, and set size, angle, colour and opacity.
  4. 04Export.

The preview is the real thing

While you type or drag, you see a fast approximation. A moment after you stop, the preview is replaced by output from the actual export path — so what you are looking at is the document you are about to get, not a rendering of what we hope it will be.

It applies to pages you add later

The watermark is attached to the document rather than to individual pages, so if you open another file afterwards its pages are stamped too.

Questions

Can I use an image as a watermark?
This tool is text only, but the Image stamp tool places a picture on every page, which is an image watermark. A saved stamp library is still to come.
Can the watermark be removed by the recipient?
It is drawn into the page content, so it cannot be toggled off in a reader. Someone determined enough could still edit it out; a watermark marks a document, it does not secure it. Use Protect for that.
